Tile Installation Planning

A tile installation involves more than choosing a colour or pattern. The supporting surface, tile type, setting materials and layout all affect the finished result. Planning these details before work begins can help reduce avoidable mistakes.
Check and Prepare the Surface
The surface beneath the tile needs to be clean, stable and suitable for the installation system. Check for uneven areas, damage or moisture concerns before laying tile. Preparation requirements vary depending on the surface and where the tile will be used.
In wet areas, tile and grout alone do not replace a suitable waterproofing system. Follow the relevant product instructions for preparation and installation.
Choose Suitable Materials
Select tile intended for its location and use. Check that the adhesive, grout and any underlayment are compatible with both the tile and the supporting surface. Manufacturer instructions should guide material selection and application.
Plan the Tile Layout
Measure the area and check the layout before fixing tiles in place. Consider joint spacing, cuts around edges and how the pattern meets corners or adjoining surfaces. A dry layout can help reveal awkward cuts before installation begins.
Finish and Care for the Installation
Allow setting materials and grout to cure according to their instructions before use. Check whether the selected tile or grout needs sealing, and use cleaning products suitable for those materials.
